Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County is looking for an enthusiastic and engaging Oral Health Outreach Counselor to provide education on oral health to young children and their parents. The ideal candidate for this entry level position will be have a history of working with small children, be comfortable speaking to a variety of people in large settings with strong organizational and technical skills. Experience working in the public health field, at a nonprofit organization or in a school setting is preferred. Candidate must be bi-lingual (English/Spanish) and be available to work on the weekends.

Position Summary: Reporting to the Community Wellness Manager this position is responsible for organizing all activities, education, field trips and engagement of patients and parents. Presentations to staff, dentists, guests, patients, and parents will be provided on a regular basis to maintain our oral hygiene awareness and assure all patients are informed and educated regarding tooth fairy learning center (TFLC) activities and educational centers (Science, Nutrition, Hygiene, Puppet-Book Corner and Reward and Recognition Wall).

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee, coordinate, provide and participate in all Tooth Fairly Learning Center (TFLC) calendar, activities, workshops, class presentations, and field trips.Monitor and maintain oral hygiene and education supplies used in the TFLC -Responsible ordering supplies on a monthly basis.Oversee and maintain cleanliness of the center and ensure it is ready for use daily.
  • Coordinate and participate in field trip activities including set-up, clean-up, oral health demonstrations and workshops.
  • Provides information to target populations about oral health through culturally sensitive, age and developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Activities include interactive projects with children ages 0-5; visual demonstration's consisting of hygiene techniques of flossing and brushing, germ transmission and nutrition in one-on-one or group presentations to children, their parents and community members.
  • Active member of Educational Committee at Healthy Smiles to develop new activities and/or workshops.
  • Engagement with children and parents daily.
  • Comfortable working with different age groups, 0-17 yrs and adult population.
  • Assist in preparing adequate materials and supplies for outreach events -
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelors Degree in public health or a sociology discipline preferred.
  • Computer literate in Word and Excel programsAbility to communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals from different racial, ethnic, cultural and social-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to plan, prepare, and present health related materials, in a clear and concise manner with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and sensitivity to issue/needs of the children and their families.
  • Proficiently able to speak and write English and Spanish
  • Experience working with one or more of the following: families, community groups, nonprofits, health programs, children 0-5
  • A valid California driver's license, own transportation

Preferred but not required Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years as a teaching assistant and/or teaching position at a school center or elementary school.
  • 1 year of community health center (medical/dental) clinic experience.
